SUNA Releases First Comprehensive Core Curriculum for Urologic Nurses and Associated Professionals
PITMAN, NJ – New developments in science, technology and health care have transformed the specialty of urologic nursing. With innovations in care available to patients in infancy through old age, it is critical to ensure that today’s nurses and allied health professionals have an evidence-based foundational knowledge and in-depth understanding of urology issues for patients in all stages of life.
Today, the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates (SUNA) releases the first-ever SUNA Core Curriculum for Urologic Nursing, a comprehensive, hybrid text written by nurses for nurses and urologic professionals in all stages of their careers. This first edition is peer-reviewed, evidence-based and applicable to urologic nurses working in general pediatric or adult urology practice.
“The SUNA Core Curriculum for Urologic Nursing is a sentinel publication on the current role and responsibilities of nurses practicing in urology, as well as those who care for adult and pediatric urology patients,” said Diane K. Newman, DNP FAAN, BCB-PMD, Editor of the SUNA Core Curriculum for Urologic Nursing. “It is the only text available for clinical practice that provides a blueprint for advanced practice registered nurses who are interested in the specialty of urology.”
In addition to clinical content, the Core Curriculum also serves as a resource for continued urologic health promotion. Chapters address topics such as genitourinary cancers, sexually transmitted infections, sexual dysfunction, incontinence and other conditions which often carry a stigma.
“The SUNA Core Curriculum for Urologic Nursing is an excellent example of comprehensive urologic information. Urologic patients, their families, and the communities that we serve deserve to have the best care possible, and the curriculum provides evidence-based information to assist in that effort,” said SUNA President Vanessa Spears RN, BSN, MHA, CURN.
As a professional community of urologic nurses and associates, SUNA is committed to enriching the professional lives of our members and improving the health of our patients and their families, through education, research and evidence-based clinical practice.
