SUNA is pleased to highlight a resource to promote effective communication between patients and providers. Patient-Clinician Communication: Basic Principles and Expectations, a Discussion Paper developed by the Institute of Medicine’s Roundtable on Value and Science-Driven Health Care, is intended to promote patient-centered clinical encounters by:
- Stating clearly the anchor concepts in patient-centered care: mutual respect, harmonized goals, supportive environment, appropriate decision partners, the right information, transparency and full disclosure, and continuous learning.
- Highlighting the minimum expectations for discussion between a clinician and the patient and/or family: the reason for the visit, the nature of the decisions being made, and the preferences of the patient.
- Emphasizing the importance of the culture and environmental factors to the success in achieving the principles and expectations for the care experience.
The Discussion Paper presents the views of several national authorities on the principles and expectations that might serve as touchstone reference points in weighing the quality and effectiveness of shared decision-making between patients and their health care providers.
